Dental implants abroad: what to know before you book

Every few months another story appears about someone who travelled abroad for a full smile makeover and came home in pain. The details vary, but the shape is usually the same: a large amount of work done in a single trip, a low headline price, and a serious problem that surfaces weeks later, once the patient is thousands of miles from whoever did the treatment.

We see patients who arrive with infections, some with ill fitting crowns, and some with implants that were never suitable for their jaw in the first place. The pattern is familiar enough that we want to set out, clearly and honestly, what to think about before booking a flight.

Why dental tourism packages keep going wrong

This is not about any one country. There are skilled dentists in Turkey, Hungary and everywhere else, just as there are poor ones in the UK. The issue is the package holiday model that has grown up around dental tourism.

Implant treatment takes months, not days. It needs imaging, an assessment of your bone, surgery in stages, and healing time between phases. Many travel packages compress all of that into a single week, with teeth extracted and implants placed in one visit and no time for the jaw to heal or for problems to surface before you are back on the plane.

The real cost tends to reveal itself later. There is no aftercare once you are home, limited practical recourse if something fails, and implant components that cannot always be identified, which makes repairs in the UK harder. Explaining what is wrong across a language barrier and several time zones is its own problem.

What good implant treatment actually looks like

Properly placed and properly maintained, a single implant can last many years. Getting there involves a full consultation with 3D imaging, an honest assessment of whether you are a suitable candidate at all, a treatment plan staged over months, clear written costs, and aftercare built in for the years that follow.

If any of that is missing, it is not really implant treatment. It is a cosmetic quick fix with a countdown attached.

Warning signs before you travel

If you are still weighing it up, these are the things that should give you pause:

• Treatment promised start to finish in a single trip
• No proper assessment before you are asked for a deposit
• All your teeth being extracted when only some need attention
• A price so low it is hard to see how it covers quality materials, proper technique and any margin for error

The third one is worth dwelling on. Healthy teeth sometimes get extracted because it makes the procedure faster and the package more profitable. Once they are gone, you are committed to a lifetime of replacements and repairs.

If you have already had treatment abroad

If you are reading this after treatment and something does not feel right, do not wait. Dealing with a problem early is almost always less expensive, and less uncomfortable, than dealing with it late.

Act on these signs promptly:

• Pain persisting beyond a few weeks
• Gum inflammation or bleeding around the implants
• Loose crowns, or difficulty eating normally
• A bad taste or odour that will not clear
