Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When decay or an injury lets infection reach it, the result is the kind of toothache that keeps people up at night. Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals it so the infection cannot return.
The honest comparison is simple: the usual alternative is taking the tooth out. Keeping your own tooth is usually the better long-term outcome when the tooth can be restored, and we will be straight with you when it cannot.
One more honest thing. A back tooth that has had root canal treatment often needs a crown afterwards to protect it. If yours will, we tell you before we start, with the price in writing, not after.

Treatment does not begin until the tooth is completely numb. Most patients say the appointment itself is the easy part.
The infected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed. Depending on the tooth, this takes one visit or two.
A filling or crown restores the tooth, and we review how it has settled. From there it is brushed, checked and looked after like any other tooth.

The treatment is done under local anaesthetic and for most patients feels like having a long filling. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the infection beforehand, which the treatment removes. The tooth can be tender for a few days afterwards.
Easier on the day, but a missing tooth brings its own costs: the gap, drifting neighbours, and the price of replacing it later. Where the tooth can be restored, keeping it is usually the better decision, and we will tell you honestly when it is not.
