If you have been looking for a dentist in south Manchester and coming up short, you are not alone. NHS dental availability across Greater Manchester has become limited, and a lot of people are unsure what their options actually are.
One option worth understanding is a private dental plan. When you look at the numbers, it often costs less than people expect and covers more than they expect. So rather than describe it in the abstract, we have done the sums with our current fees and put them below.
A dental plan is a monthly subscription that covers the cost of your routine dental care. You pay a fixed amount each month and in return you get a defined set of appointments included, with no bill to settle when you turn up. Most plans also include worldwide dental emergency insurance and a discount on additional treatments.
Dental plans are not the same as dental insurance. Insurance is reactive. You pay a premium and claim if something goes wrong. A plan is proactive. It covers the regular preventive care that makes things less likely to go wrong in the first place.
They are also different from NHS treatment, where you pay a band charge at each appointment. With a plan, you pay monthly and the routine appointments are already covered.
We offer Denplan Essentials in three adult tiers and three children's plans. The prices below are current, and so are the inclusions listed against each tier.
Adult plans
Children's plans
Children's plans are £7, £11 and £15 a month depending on the tier. What is included rises with the tier, starting with examinations and emergency cover and adding hygiene appointments further up. Ask reception which tier suits your child, or check the current detail on our fees page.
This is the part that matters. Below we have used our current appointment fees: a routine examination at £50, the Airflow Spa Clean at £99 and an emergency appointment at £40. A standard hygiene visit is no longer sold on its own, so for the hygiene visits included in a plan we have used £55, which is the £99 Airflow Spa Clean less the £44 members’ upgrade.
Adult Tier 1, £17.99 a month, which is £215.88 a year
Difference: £74.12 a year in your favour.
Adult Tier 2, £23.99 a month, which is £287.88 a year
Difference: £112.12 a year in your favour.
Adult Tier 3, £35.99 a month, which is £431.88 a year
Difference: £56.12 a year in your favour, and that is before the whitening top ups and the bonding maintenance appointment, which are included in the tier but are not sold separately, so we have left them out of the sum rather than put a number on them.
On all three adult tiers the value of the included appointments comes to more than the annual cost. Whether the plan suits you depends on whether you will use those appointments, which is worth being honest with yourself about.
Members on any adult plan receive 10% off non cosmetic treatments. To be clear about what that means:
Included in the 10% discount:
Not included (cosmetic treatments):
To be upfront about why: cosmetic treatments are priced separately to reflect the time and laboratory work involved, and finance options are available for them instead.
If you have ever had toothache at seven on a Friday evening, or broken a tooth the morning of something important, you will know that finding an appointment at short notice is stressful.
As a plan member, your membership includes two emergency appointments a year, plus worldwide dental emergency insurance when you travel. For everyone else we take emergency appointments when availability allows, at £40.
We are a private dental practice, so there are no NHS waiting lists and no band charges. What we offer instead is unhurried care from a team that has been in Sale since 2005.
Whether you are interested in a Denplan membership, an Invisalign consultation, composite bonding or simply a thorough examination, you are welcome. A new patient examination is £35 and you can read more on our new patients page.
On the numbers, on all three adult tiers, yes, provided you attend the appointments the plan includes. If you would not otherwise book two hygiene visits a year, the sum does not work in your favour and you would be better paying as you go.
Beyond the maths, the argument for a plan is consistency. Care that is already paid for is easier to commit to, and consistent care means fewer surprises and less expensive work later on. The dental care that helps you is the care you actually receive.
