If your teeth start aching in spring and you can’t work out why, a dentist might not be the first person you need to see. Hay fever brings a handful of effects on your mouth that most people never connect to pollen. Sinus pressure, dry mouth, and disturbed sleep all quietly raise your risk of toothache, decay, and gum trouble.
Here’s what actually happens in your mouth during hay fever season, and the small habits that make a real difference.
Yes. The most common reason is sinus pressure.
Your maxillary sinuses sit just above your upper back teeth, separated by a thin layer of bone. When hay fever inflames the sinus lining and pressure builds, that pressure pushes down on the tooth roots beneath. The result feels exactly like a toothache. Usually dull and persistent, often worse when you bend forward or lie down.
The clue that it’s sinus-related rather than dental: the discomfort tends to affect several upper back teeth at once, not one specific tooth, and it usually eases when your sinuses clear or you take a decongestant.
If the pain stays focused on a single tooth, sticks around after pollen season, or wakes you up at night, it’s worth seeing your dentist. Sinus-referred pain and real dental pain can feel almost identical, and only a clinical exam tells you which is which.
Covered above, but worth restating. If your upper back teeth ache during pollen season, your sinuses are the most likely culprit. The teeth themselves are usually fine, but persistent pain still warrants a check.
Most over-the-counter hay fever tablets work by reducing histamine, which calms your symptoms. A common side effect is reduced saliva production.
Saliva is your mouth’s natural defence. It washes away food debris, neutralises the acids in food and drink, and carries minerals that help repair enamel. When saliva drops, decay risk goes up. Cavities can form faster, and weak spots get worse more quickly.
If you’re taking antihistamines daily through pollen season, you’re essentially living with a mildly dry mouth for weeks. It’s worth knowing.
A blocked nose forces you to breathe through your mouth, especially while you sleep. Six to eight hours of mouth breathing dries out your tongue, gums, and teeth.
You’ll often notice it first as bad breath in the morning, or gums that feel tender or look slightly swollen. Long term, regular mouth breathing during sleep is linked to a higher risk of gum disease and cavities.
Most of this is simple, and none of it requires a trip to anyone.
Drink water through the day. Plain water, not tea, coffee, or fizzy drinks. Hydration helps your body keep producing saliva even with antihistamines on board.
Chew sugar-free gum after meals. Chewing stimulates saliva flow, and the xylitol in most sugar-free gums actively reduces the bacteria that cause decay.
Try a saline nasal spray before bed. Clearing your nasal passages even briefly can help you breathe through your nose for the first stretch of the night, when sleep is deepest. Ten seconds at the bathroom sink, low effort, real difference.
See your GP if hay fever is wrecking your sleep. A stronger antihistamine or steroid nasal spray may work better than what you’ve got. Better symptom control means less mouth breathing, which means less mouth trouble.
See your dentist if pain lingers. Sinus toothache fades as the sinuses clear. Dental toothache doesn’t. If pain persists past pollen season or stays focused on one tooth, book a check-up.
Hay fever doesn’t damage your teeth on its own, but it raises the risk of decay and gum trouble through dry mouth, mouth breathing, and antihistamine side effects. Sinus pressure can also mimic toothache convincingly enough to send you to the wrong appointment.
Sip water through the day, chew sugar-free gum, clear your nose before bed, and pay attention to whether tooth pain follows pollen levels or sticks around regardless. That’s most of what you need to know.
Can a sinus infection cause tooth pain? Yes. Your maxillary sinuses sit directly above your upper back teeth. When sinus pressure or infection builds, it can push on the tooth roots and create a toothache-like sensation. The pain usually spans multiple upper back teeth and eases as the sinus pressure resolves.
How can I tell if my toothache is from hay fever or a dental problem? Sinus toothache typically affects several upper back teeth at once, feels dull and pressure-like, and worsens when you bend forward. A dental problem usually focuses on one tooth, sharpens with hot or cold food, and doesn’t track with pollen levels. If you’re unsure, see your dentist for an exam.
Does dry mouth from antihistamines damage teeth? Not directly, but it raises the risk of decay. Saliva protects against acid and bacteria, so when there’s less of it, teeth are more vulnerable. If you take antihistamines daily through hay fever season, drink water regularly, chew sugar-free gum, and keep up with your check-ups.
How long does sinus toothache usually last? It typically eases within a few days as your sinus inflammation settles, often faster with decongestants or antihistamines. If it’s lasting longer than a week or two, or staying focused on one tooth, see your dentist.
If you’re not sure whether your toothache is sinus-related or dental, a check-up is the fastest way to know.

Happy birthday to our founder, Dr Aisha 🎂
She opened Sale Dental Spa in 2005 with one idea: that going to the dentist should feel like being looked after, not just treated. Twenty-one years on, that’s still the standard.
Every patient whose smile she’s changed, every team member she’s mentored, every detail of how we do things, it all goes back to her.
