Eleanor Gordon-Smith wrote something in The Guardian that stopped me in my tracks. She asked how to build self-worth that actually lasts when you’re doing all the “right” things and still feeling like it’s slipping through your fingers.
I know that feeling. I was in the best shape of my life, working harder than I’d ever worked, ticking every box. And I was still miserable.
I’m not a dentist, but I’ve worked in cosmetic dentistry for the last few years at Sale Dental Spa. What I’ve witnessed in hundreds of consultations has shown me something unexpected about smile confidence and mental wellbeing: sometimes the barrier to genuine self-worth isn’t internal at all. Sometimes it’s your smile.
In the digital age, it’s almost impossible not to care what people think. Every photo, every video call, every social situation puts your smile front and centre. Studies on dental confidence show that nearly a quarter of people actively hide their teeth whilst smiling.

You’re told that wanting to change your smile is shallow. That “real” self-worth comes from within. But when you’re constantly managing how you smile, avoiding photos, you’re not free to do the inner work. Smile insecurity takes up too much mental space.
Cosmetic dental treatment isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about removing a specific barrier that prevents you from showing up fully. You can accept yourself and remove barriers at the same time.
