Airflow dental hygiene in Sale: why we retired the standard scale and polish
From 1 September 2026, Sale Dental Spa has replaced the traditional scale and polish with something better: the Airflow Hygiene appointment. Thirty minutes with your dental therapist, built around the Swiss made EMS Airflow system, with full gum health charting and stain removal included as standard. Here is what has changed, why we changed it, and what it means for your teeth.
What was wrong with the old scale and polish?
Nothing was wrong with it, for what it was. A 20 minute scale and polish removes hardened tartar and buffs the surface of your teeth. The problem is what never fitted into those 20 minutes.
Gum disease and tooth decay are caused by biofilm, a sticky and nearly invisible film of bacteria that constantly builds on your teeth. A scaler removes hard tartar, and a polishing cup smooths the surface, but biofilm hides in deep grooves, between teeth and along the gumline, in exactly the places instruments cannot reach. The old appointment cleaned the tooth. It did not fully remove the cause of disease.
There was also no time for a proper gum health assessment, stain removal needed a separate visit, and for many patients the whole experience was defined by scraping. If you have ever gripped the armrest during a hygiene visit, you know exactly what we mean.
What is EMS Airflow?
The EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master is a professional cleaning system made in Switzerland and used in leading dental practices worldwide. Instead of relying mainly on scraping, it cleans your teeth with a controlled jet of warm water, air and an ultra fine powder called erythritol, a gentle sweetener ground finer than flour.
This jet washes the bacterial biofilm off every surface of your teeth, including the grooves, gaps and gumline areas that instruments miss. It also lifts staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking as part of the same clean. Where hardened tartar remains, a modern and much gentler ultrasonic scaler removes it, but only where it is genuinely needed.
This approach is known as guided biofilm therapy. The biofilm comes off first, which shows the therapist exactly where scaling is still required. For most patients, the majority of the appointment is warm water rather than metal instruments.
What happens in an Airflow Hygiene appointment?
- A proper gum health check. Your therapist measures and records your gum health at every visit, including plaque and bleeding scores. You see your own numbers, and we track them over time so any changes are caught early.
- Biofilm removal with Airflow. The warm water and powder jet cleans every surface. Most patients describe it as a warm, gentle pressure wash, and the powder tastes faintly sweet.
- Stain removal, included. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking stains lift as part of the clean, not as a paid extra. Most people notice visibly brighter teeth straight away.
- Targeted scaling. Any remaining hardened tartar is removed with a gentle ultrasonic scaler, quickly and precisely.
- Advice that fits. Thirty minutes means there is finally time to explain what your scores mean and what to do at home.
Is Airflow better than a normal scale and polish?
It is different in ways that matter. Clinical studies consistently find that patients tolerate erythritol air polishing better than traditional hand and ultrasonic instruments, which is a careful way of saying it is far more comfortable. It removes biofilm from places instruments cannot reach. And unlike traditional abrasive polishing paste, the fine powder is gentle on enamel and safe on composite bonding, veneers, aligner attachments and implants, which makes it the right way to maintain cosmetic dental work.
Hardened tartar still needs a scaler, and we still use one where needed. The difference is that scaling becomes a short, targeted step rather than the whole appointment.
Who benefits most from Airflow teeth cleaning?
Nervous patients and anyone who has avoided the hygienist because of the scraping. People with sensitive teeth. Coffee and red wine drinkers, smokers and ex smokers with staining. Anyone with composite bonding, veneers or Invisalign attachments. Implant patients. And anyone with bleeding gums or a history of gum problems, because the gum charting at every visit means nothing gets missed.
How much does Airflow Hygiene cost in Sale?
The Airflow Hygiene appointment at Sale Dental Spa is £99 and takes 30 minutes. Everything above is included: the EMS Airflow clean, stain removal, full gum health charting and personalised advice. There are no add ons. It is our standard private hygiene appointment for all bookings from 1 September 2026. NHS appointments and charges are unchanged, and Denplan members can upgrade any included hygiene visit for £44.
For comparison, practices across Greater Manchester typically charge £70 to £115 for a standard hygiene visit, with Airflow treatment usually added on top or priced separately at £115 to £167 where it is included.
Frequently asked questions
Does Airflow hurt?
No. Most patients find it far more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish. The water is warm, the powder is soft and faintly sweet, and scaling is kept to a minimum.
Is Airflow just for stain removal?
No. Stain removal is included, but the main purpose is removing the bacterial film that causes gum disease and decay, and measuring your gum health properly at every visit.
Is Airflow safe for bonding, veneers and Invisalign?
Yes. The powder is chosen specifically to be gentle on dental work, and it is a better way to maintain cosmetic dentistry than repeated abrasive polishing.
Why is the appointment 30 minutes?
Because the things that matter, a full gum check, a thorough clean, stain removal and proper advice, do not fit in 20 minutes. The extra time is as much of the upgrade as the technology.
