How a Dental Emergency Almost Ruined a Family Holiday (and What We Did to Help)

Let me share a story I think many of you will relate to, especially if you’ve ever planned a big family holiday. A few days ago, a patient walked into my surgery visibly stressed and with a niggling pain in his jaw. With departure looming, the last thing anyone wants is dental trouble right before heading off on a much-anticipated getaway.

When Worry Meets Urgency

Our patient was a busy professional, juggling work and family, and had spent months organising this trip. He told me how much effort went into booking flights, hotels, and activities, and how important it was for everything to go smoothly. But now, pain threatened to overshadow those plans.

It’s a situation I see more often than you’d expect. Patients just want to make sure nothing interferes with their time away. Who wants to go around looking for a dentist in an unfamiliar place where a language barrier exists to top it all off?

The Diagnosis: Not What He Wanted to Hear

After a quick examination and an X-ray, the reason for his discomfort became clear: a sizeable infection at the root of his molar. I had to break the news that a root canal treatment (RCT) was necessary. He was visibly upset, knowing time was tight and hoping for a quick fix.

He asked if I could just prescribe antibiotics, thinking they’d get him through the holiday. Many patients believe antibiotics are a magical cure, but it’s not that straightforward.

The Dilemma: Antibiotics and Air Travel

As a dentist, I face this crossroads often. I understand the impulse to reach for antibiotics, especially when under pressure. But prescribing them unnecessarily can lead to resistance, making them less effective when truly needed.

Infected teeth aren’t something to ignore, especially when travelling. Did you know that changes in air cabin pressure during flights can make dental pain much worse? Imagine sitting on a plane, high above the clouds, and suddenly that mild ache becomes a throbbing agony. I explained this to him, and the worry in his eyes grew.

Finding a Solution: Teamwork and Compassion

Like many, he was anxious about how he’d find an appointment before his flight. After all, specialist dentists often have waiting lists. But I didn’t want his holiday, or his health, to suffer.

Fortunately, Dr Sabeer, a colleague who always keeps a few slots open for emergencies, was able to help. We got him booked in, ensuring his problem could be addressed before takeoff.

A very happy Ian sent us a digital postcard from Morocco, smiling with his family. This was a nice gesture from him that not only brought a smile to my face but also a tremendous sense of job satisfaction.

What This Taught Me

This case reminded me just how important timely, patient-centred care is, especially when life’s special moments are at stake. Dental emergencies don’t respect calendars, but with the right approach and a responsive team, they don’t have to ruin your plans.
