Are Monthly Dental Plans Worth It? We Did the Maths.

If you’ve been searching for an NHS dentist in South Manchester and coming up short, you’re not alone. NHS dental availability has become increasingly limited across Greater Manchester, leaving many people wondering what their options actually are.

One option worth understanding is a private dental plan. Not because we’re trying to sell you something, but because when you look at the numbers, it often costs less than you’d think and covers more than you’d expect.

At Sale Dental Spa, we offer Denplan membership plans for adults and children. In this post, we’re going to explain exactly what a dental plan is, what it covers, and then do the actual maths so you can decide for yourself.

What Is a Dental Plan?

A dental plan is a monthly subscription that covers the cost of your routine dental care. Think of it a bit like car insurance, except instead of hoping you never need to use it, you’re proactively using it every single year.

You pay a fixed amount each month, and in return you get a defined set of appointments and treatments included, with no surprise bills when you turn up. Most plans also include worldwide dental emergency insurance and a discount on additional treatments when you need them.

Dental plans are different from dental insurance. Insurance is reactive—you pay a premium and claim if something goes wrong. A dental plan is proactive—it covers your regular preventive care so that things are less likely to go wrong in the first place.

They’re also different from NHS treatment. With NHS treatment, you pay a Band charge at each appointment. With a dental plan, you pay monthly and those routine appointments are already covered.

The Plans We Offer at Sale Dental Spa

We currently offer Denplan Essentials in three adult tiers and three children’s plans. Here’s what each one includes:

• Tier 2 – £23.99/month: 2 checkups, 4 hygiene appointments, 2 emergency appointments, 10% discount on additional treatments, worldwide emergency insurance
• Tier 3 – £35.99/month: 2 checkups, 2 hygiene appointments, 2 Airflow treatments, 2 whitening tubes, 1 bonding maintenance appointment, 2 emergency appointments, 10% discount on additional treatments, worldwide emergency insurance

Children’s Plans

• Child Tier 1 – £9.99/month: 2 checkups, 1 hygiene appointment, 2 emergency appointments, 10% discount on additional treatments, worldwide emergency insurance
• Child Tier 2 – £11.99/month: 2 checkups, 2 hygiene appointments, 2 emergency appointments, 10% discount on additional treatments, worldwide emergency insurance
• Child Tier 3 – £13.99/month: 2 checkups, 2 hygiene appointments, 1 fluoride treatment, 2 emergency appointments, 10% discount on additional treatments, worldwide emergency insurance

We also offer family discounts: 5% off for 2 family members, 10% off for 3 members, and 15% off for 4 or more members on monthly fees.

This is the bit that actually matters. Let’s use our standard treatment prices and work out whether the plan pays for itself.

Our current prices for individual appointments are:

• Checkup: £45
• Hygiene appointment: £55
• Airflow: £99
• Emergency appointment: £40
• Bonding maintenance: £100
• Whitening tubes: £40 each

Adult Tier 1 – £17.99/month (£215.88/year)

What’s included as standard:

• 2 checkups = £90
• 2 hygiene appointments = £110
• 2 emergency appointments = £80
• Total value: £280

You save: £64.12 per year

Adult Tier 2 – £23.99/month (£287.88/year)

What’s included as standard:

• 2 checkups = £90
• 4 hygiene appointments = £220
• 2 emergency appointments = £80
• Total value: £390

You save: £102.12 per year

Adult Tier 3 – £35.99/month (£431.88/year)

What’s included as standard:

• 2 checkups = £90
• 2 hygiene appointments = £110
• 2 Airflow treatments = £198
• 2 whitening tubes = £80
• 1 bonding maintenance appointment = £100
• 2 emergency appointments = £80
• Total value: £658

You save: £226.12 per year

What Does the 10% Discount Cover?

Members on any adult Denplan plan receive 10% off non-cosmetic treatments. To be clear about what this includes:

Covered by the 10% discount:

• Fillings (white/composite fillings)
• Tooth extractions
• Root canal treatment
• Crowns
• Bridges
• Dentures
• Periodontal (gum) treatment
• X-rays
• Fissure sealants
• Night guards and sports mouthguards
• Additional hygiene appointments beyond your plan allowance
• Additional emergency dental appointments beyond your plan allowance

Not covered by the 10% discount (cosmetic treatments):

• Invisalign teeth straightening
• Composite bonding
• Teeth whitening trays and in-chair whitening
• Veneers
• Dental implants
• Root canal treatment on molar teeth (specialist referral)

To be upfront: cosmetic treatments like Invisalign and composite bonding are excluded from the discount because the pricing on those reflects the skill, lab work, and time involved. They’re priced separately and there are finance options available for those treatments.

What About Emergency Appointments?

Emergency dental appointments are a big deal. If you’ve ever had toothache at 7pm on a Friday or a broken tooth the morning before a big event, you’ll know that finding emergency dental care in South Manchester at short notice is stressful.

As a Denplan member, your plan includes 2 emergency appointments per year, and worldwide dental emergency insurance if you’re travelling. That alone gives significant peace of mind.

For non-members, we do accept emergency dental appointments when availability allows, at £40 per appointment. But members are prioritised.

We’re a Private Practice Accepting New Patients in Sale, South Manchester

If you’re looking for a dentist in South Manchester that is currently accepting new patients, we are open to new registrations for both our dental plan members and self-pay patients.

We understand the frustration of trying to find an NHS dentist in South Manchester. The reality is that NHS dental provision in Greater Manchester has significant capacity challenges and many practices are not accepting new NHS patients. We are a private dental practice, which means there are no NHS waiting lists, no Band charges, and no rushed 10-minute appointments.
